Mercury is the planet the rules over communication, intellect, logic and reasoning, the way we think and how we express that to others. When the planet goes Retrograde it has a tendency to reek havoc on those areas in our life. Communications are misunderstood. Reasoning can fly out the window. And don’t even get me started on how Mercury Retrograde can cause problems with email and other electronic devices, especially where communication is concerned. Mercury Retrograde is the ideal time to work with “RE” energy. Rethink, redo, release, revisit, reevaluate, restructure… You get the point! Mercury goes Retrograde typically 3 times a year for 3 weeks. I have the dates for this year’s Mercury Retrograde listed below for you.
The following is a list of crystals that I suggest to help us through Mercury Retrograde and why I recommend them. You’ll notice a theme around communication, grounding, and protection. Amazonite helps us to speak from the heart and to remain calm even when things aren’t going as planned. Aquamarine helps us to communicate clearly, calm our emotions, and to think before we speak. Blue Lace Agate helps us to stay calm and peaceful allowing us to communicate and express ourselves clearly. Emerald enhances memory and mental focus. Fluorite is the stone for the mind as it helps us to think clearly, stay focused, and boost our memory. Hematite is for grounding, protection, and to help us stay strong especially when we are faced with difficult situations. Hematite also enhances concentration. Smoky Quartz offers us positive energy and helps to chase away any dark moods. It is grounding and protective while offering emotional support. Finally, Black Tourmaline is our powerhouse for protection, including protection from EMF and electrical smog.

Mercury in Retrograde – What Does This Mean?
The following article was written by Jane Kathryn from Jane’s Crystal Garden.
When Mercury is Retrograde: Sometimes the other planets appear to be traveling backward through the zodiac; this is an illusion. We call this illusion retrograde motion. Because Mercury is the planet situated closest to the Sun, its orbit is much shorter than Earth’s.
Three or four times a year, it appears as if Mercury is going backwards for about three weeks. This time was traditionally associated with confusions, delay, and frustration.
In mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods, and in astrology, the planet Mercury governs communication, travel, and learning. For this reason, Mercury retrograde has earned a ruthless reputation for sending conversations haywire, scotching carefully-laid plans, and wreaking havoc on everything from important work contracts to your home computer.
Despite the phrase, Mercury itself doesn’t actually move backward — “retrograde” refers to the apparent change in motion of the planet when it’s viewed from Earth. Fast-moving Mercury has a highly elliptical orbit, meaning that it travels more quickly when it’s closest to the sun. Three or four times a year, the planet “catches up” to the Earth’s orbit, giving the illusion that it’s changing direction in the sky for around three weeks.
Perhaps Mercury’s retrograde periods can cause our plans to go awry. However, this is an excellent time to reflect on the past. Intuition is high during these periods, and coincidences can be extraordinary.
The planet Mercury rules communication, travel, contracts, automobiles, and such. So, when Mercury is retrograde, remain flexible, allow time for extra travel, and avoid signing contracts. Review projects and plans at these times, but wait until Mercury is direct again to make any final decisions.
About a week or two before Mercury retrogrades, finish any tasks or projects at hand. You can’t stop your life, but plan ahead, have back-up plans, and be prepared for angrier people and miscommunication.
Some people blame Mercury retrograde for “bad” things that happen in their lives. Instead, take this time to sit back and review where you put your energy in your life. For example if family and faith are important to you, are you putting your energies there or just overextended in other areas? Take a moment to reflect.
Mercury and You
The type of influence depends on which of the 12 zodiac signs the planet is in when Mercury goes retrograde.
One of the best ways to cope with it — as with anything, really — is to just “go with the flow”. When you fight Mercury retrograde, that’s when life gets really ugly. Just take some time, go slowly, be careful, don’t freak yourself out by expecting to be uber-productive-perfect right now. Be good to yourself and the people around you, now more than ever!
A quick and dirty guide to surviving Mercury Retrograde!
Be sure not to take things too personally. People will often say offensive things they didn’t mean around this time, because their thinking is clouded and their communication skills are on pause! If your best friend suddenly became the most insensitive person in the world, give her the benefit of the doubt.
Back up your data!
Don’t purchase any big ticket items, because they will often have flaws or issues that you weren’t aware of! Of course, life doesn’t stop just because of wacky planetary movement, so if you absolutely have to get that car, computer or iPhone, TRIPLE-check all the paperwork, and make sure you have a warranty!
Take things with a grain of salt. Everyone is a bit confused, and people are much more inclined to change their mind once Mercury goes direct. Mercury can be a bit of a trickster — could it be that the next few weeks are a big karmic joke?!
Read the small print on any contracts. Ask lots of questions. Again, you can’t put your life on hold just because of some silly planet, but adapt your lifestyle a bit so that things run more smoothly. Communication can be a mess right now, but do your best to get as much information as you can.
Finish things you started a while ago. Home improvement projects? Wardrobe re-organization? Short stories? Love affairs?! This is an excellent time to tie up loose ends and file things away forever.
Get together with old friends, reminisce and laugh!
Double-check any information you’re given, especially as relates to travel arrangements! During one particularly formidable Mercury retrograde, I actually caught a cab to the wrong airport! Check times, delays, baggage allowances, reservations… everything!
Allow Mercury to nudge you in unusual directions. If you seem to find yourself “back to the future”, don’t just try to wriggle out of it — look at what the universe is trying to show you. What can you learn from this situation? This is a fantastic time to re-examine, accept and move on.
Use the things you’ve discovered in the past to create a dazzling new vision so that you’re ready to blast ahead when Mercury goes direct!
It would be a great time to reorganize your files or closets. Pack up clothes you haven’t worn in a while and give them to charity. Polish your shoes and decide which ones need repair, and while you are at it, decide which appliances need to be taken in for repair as well. Oddly, as busy as we are, during these phases we always seem to find more time to get things done. When you clean your closets, you will find treasures you thought you lost or had completely forgotten about, always a bonus of going through things you have not seen in a while.
Mercury rules anything that begins with “re”: redo, reassess, repair, repeat, redesign, or revisit. It’s always human nature to want to hear that new opportunities are coming our way, but we really do need to focus on the quality of our work and improve it to the best it can be. Often this is a better use of our time than continually chasing the newest idea. Mercury retrograde allows you to be thorough and to perfect your performance.
Don’t assume everything goes wrong during Mercury retrograde – sometimes things work in your favor. If you are self-employed and turned down an assignment because the price the client was willing to pay was too low, this same client may come back after the retrograde (after he sees many others turning down his offer) – and you get the project after all, at the right price. People reconsider their stance when Mercury is retrograde, and in some cases, conditions turn out to be more favorable to you than they might have been before.
As you can see, Mercury retrograde is not all bad – you can count on it!
Crystals to Use
Crystals to carry during this transition would be those that help to bring peace, security, and patience. Crystals that will help to bring you into this space of calm would include, Blue Lace Agate, Celestite, Turquoise, Chrysocolla, Petalite or Sugilite.
Carry crystals and stones that will help you to achieve and maintain a sense of calm – a stress and tension free zone within. Try carrying some Amethyst, Blue Calcite, Charoite, Dumortierite, Obsidian, Selenite, Emerald or Rose Quartz.
Retrograde does not HAVE to be a bad thing. State and create a new, positive intention instead. Keep Nephrite Jade, Amazonite and/or Prehnite close by. These stones will help remove fear, anxiety, and release those butterflies in the tummy. Make sure to add Cavansite, Larimar and/or Blue Topaz to help bring in the energy of your new and improved, positive intent. For instance, my new intent is, “Mercury is a wonderful time to reflect on my experience, release that which no longer serves, and rejoice in the coming of a new day.“
Ok, so you are convinced that everything is going to go wacky. There’s an app for that an application of crystals and stones, that is. Use Tree Moss Agate or Obsidian to stabilize and balance your electronic devices. To keep you and your electronics grounded, use some Red Jasper, Hematite, or Black Tourmaline. To keep those lines of communication opened and cleared, try using Blue Kyanite, Blue Calcite, Labradorite or Lapis Lazuli.
Pyrite helps to remove the energy of chaos from around you, which in turn will give you a more calming environment. Howlite, Lepidolite, Moonstone or Rutilated Quartz will help to ease anxiety and allow you a greater sense of organization. Ametrine, Fluorite and/or Ruby will help you to focus and bring you back to focus any time you find yourself wandering in a different direction. If everything seems to be a mess and nothing is working out as it should, take a step back, take a deep breath, and hold on to some Selenite. You will be amazed how quickly you become re-centered.
“Mercury retrograde gives us time to catch up with ourselves, and to look back. Something from the past might return in a different form. This can mean people, ideas or buried insights that need to surface for you to move forward. Often it’s felt as a contemplative time, depending on the sign, a chance to go over old ground again, to claim what you missed the first time.” ~Molly Hall
